Ithaca College Take Back the Tap

Take Back the Tap, sponsored by Food and Water Watch, is a national movement dedicated to raising awareness about the environmental, health, and equity problems associated with the bottled water industry. More than 10,000 people have taken the pledge to Take Back the Tap!

Ithaca College's chapter of TBTT started in later 2011 when a group of four students (myself included) met to discuss the excessive culture of plastic water bottle consumption on campus. We decided to start a student organization that would actively advocate for a ban on the sale of plastic water bottles on campus.

With this long-term goal in mind, we have made a splash on campus through outreach such as documentary screenings, water taste tests, and collaboration with other organizations. As I graduate and step down from my position as vice president, I know I leave the group in highly capable hands. In addition to our general petition to ban the sale of bottled water on campus, our next step is to work directly with individual departments to reduce their bottled water purchases.

Americans empty 2.5 million plastic water bottles every hour. If thrown in the trash, each one takes approximately 500 years to decompose.
