Clean Water Action is a national, environmental organization working for clean, safe, and affordable water, and the prevention of health-threatening pollution. They have offices all across the country working on different campaigns aiming to protect the nation's waters.

During the summer of 2011, I interned at the Philadelphia office of Clean Water Action. My responsibilities included:

  • Conducting research on non-compliant municipal separate storm sewer systems (MS4)  in Pennsylvania
  • Writing letters to the editors of local newspapers regarding important legislation
  • Calling members of the organization to send letters and emails on their behalf to their legislators
  • Attending lobby days a the Pennsylvania Capitol

This internship provided me with a comprehensive understanding of state-wide policy surrounding water. I was also able to focus some of my efforts on hydraulic fracturing in Pennsylvania, an issue that is very important to me. I had the opportunity to lobby my legislators urging them to support and oppose particular bills that would regulate hydraulic fracturing in Pennsylvania.

Most of all, this experience reaffirmed my interest in water studies from a political perspective. I know I have an interest in both the science, management, and policy surrounding water  and I hope to contribute to the efforts of Clean Water Action again in the future.
